Rs 200 thousand not enough for reconstruction grant: Dr Bhattarai

Gorkha, Aug 16: Naya Shakti Party’s Coordinator, Dr Baburam Bhattarai, today expressed his dissatisfaction towards the government and the National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) over the stalled progress of reconstruction 15 months after the massive earthquake struck with Gorkha’s Barpak as the epicentre.
At an interaction ‘Gorkha Reconstruction: Possibility and Challenges’, former PM Dr Bhattarai stressed on need to distribute Rs 500,000 in reconstruction grant to quake-stricken rather than Rs 200,000.
“The 200,000 rupees on top of 50 kinds of pre-conditions cannot build a home,” Bhattarai argued, adding, “The quake-stricken can build a quake-resilient house only if they are provided grant at the rate of Rs 500,000 and loan carrying minimal interests.”
The government’s decision to extend grant at the rate of Rs 50,000 will not be sufficient for supplying the construction materials and building the foundation of a house, he added. RSS
