PHSC endorses the name of proposed Chief Election Commissioner

Kathmandu, July 8: The Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee (PHSC) today endorsed Dr Ayodhi Prasad Yadav for the post of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).
Yadav, who currently serves as acting CEC, was endorsed unanimously after a hearing presided over by Committee Chairman Kul Bahadur Gurung.
During the hearing, the proposed CEC maintained that the Election Commission was ready for holding the local elections by upcoming November if management of overall infrastructure was completed by mid August along with the passage of election related Act.
The election code of conduct has been made for all and forever, so the political parties and party cadres will be subjected to action if they violate the code of conduct, Yadav added.
He called for adequate discussion in order to force the compliance with fundamental conditions of a free and fair election and its management. Discussions are underway for electronic voting and the process for online voting for non-resident Nepalis, Yadav said, while vowing to take the support of media in the election as it remained a vigorous medium.
Yadav said voters’ identity cards with photos were produced to rectify the defect in the 2064 BS voters’ list while advancing the campaign for voters’ education and information.
In reference to the writ petition registered with the Supreme Court over his re-appointment, Yadav mentioned that there were no provisions in the Interim Constitution over re-appointment. He elaborated further ruling out the prospect of a constitutional hurdle in his way citing that SC need not issue a verdict as per the demand by determining consequent constitutional crisis and vacuum over the writ petitions related to the activities undertaken as per the presidential fiat on removing obstacles and hurdles.
Committee members Chin Kaji Shrestha, Asta Laxmi Shakya, Chitralekha Yadav, Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat, Ananda Prasad Dhungana, Ganeshman Gurung among others put forth their questions during the meeting. RSS
