Infrastructure development, expansion of air routes is the basis of tourism – Minister Shahi


Kathmandu, Aug 26: Newly-appointed Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Jeevan Bahadur Shahi has said stress would be laid on the development of the infrastructure and expansion of the air routes connectivity for the development of the tourism sector which is the basis for economic prosperity.
Giving directives to the employees of the Ministry and its subordinate bodies after assuming office in Singha Durbar today, Minister Shahi urged the employees to work in a result-oriented and transparent manner.
“Tourism is our main source of income. Infrastructure development and expansion of air services should be moved ahead with special priority for the development of the tourism sector, a reliable source of economic source for nation’s progress. The Ministry too should be geared up for that,” he said.
Stating that the western and the far-western part of the country is lagging behind in terms of tourism activities compared to the eastern part, the newly-appointed Minister said that works should be carried out for infrastructure development and accessibility of air service along with policy reform measures.
“I am here in the Ministry not only for travelling to the Ministry on a posh limousine waving the national flag. I am here to work and deliver results,” the Minister for Tourism said of his priority. He expressed the commitment to bring changes in the working style of the Ministry with a clear plan of action.
He stressed on the need of cooperation and support from all to make the Ministry a model one and result-oriented.
On the occasion, the newly-appointed Minister directed the office-bearers of the bosies concerned to bring reforms at the Tribhuvan International Airport, the only international airport of the country, in the context of public complaints of declining quality of services.
Minister Shahi also directed the officials concerned to add aircraft to the existing fleet of the national flag-carrier, the Nepal Airlines Corporation, and also to carry out works in a planned manner for the quality management as well as adding to the number and reform of domestic airports.
Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Shahi has decided to form a task force for the management of the scope and organisational structure of the Ministry in the context of federalism, as his first decision after assuming the post.
At the programme, Secretary at the Ministry Prem Kumar Rai had briefed about the activities of the Ministry.
The heads of department and employees of the bodies under the Ministry welcomed the newly-appointed Minister.
Born at Kharpunath of Humla district in 2025BS, Shahi is the elected MP from the district under the first-past-the-post election system. RSS
