Kathmandu, June 10: People of the Newar community are celebrating the Siti Nakha festival today. The cultural festival falls on the sixth day of the waxing moon in the Nepali month of Jeth according to the lunar calendar.
As part of the festival, the people of the community clean their houses as well as the wells, ponds and water sources in the neighbourhood. They also worship these water sources.
This annual festival is significant in that it teaches society the importance of conserving the water sources and keeping them clean. It also highlights the importance of water to life.
According to history and culture experts, although the exact time this festival started to be observed is not known, it dates back to ancient times.
The Siti Nakha festival has developed into one of the important festivals of the Newar community. RSS
