FNJ condemns attack and arrest of two journalists


Kathmandu, June 12: Federation of the Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has condemned the attack against its member of Solukhumbu chapter and Managing Director of Himal FM, Bhanubhakta Niraula, and arrest of litterateur and journalist Sneha Sayami.
The FNJ condemned the attack on Niraula by Solukhumbu Coordinator of Local Peace Development, Buddhi Kumar Rajbhandari. Rajbhandari had attacked on Niraula on June 10 in front of the District Administration Office reportedly taking over a news report.
The FNJ has demanded the bodies concerned to take action against the guilty. A press release issued today by General Secretary Ujir Magar states, “The attack on journalist by a person of a responsible position without adopting legal remedy over dissatisfaction regarding the news is interference on press freedom.”
`Similarly, the FNJ condemned the misbehaviour by police of journalist Sayami in course of news collection. It also demanded action against the police personnel involved in the incident and asked the bodies concerned to respect constitutional rights of journalists. Police had taken Sayami under control for three hours on Saturday for capturing a photo related to road expansion at local Dhungeadda.
Meanwhile, issuing a press release today, the Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu, argued that journalist Sayami had spread illusion over his arrest. The press release states that Sayami had tried to obstruct road expansion task in course of demolishing huts and wall on the basis of demarcation at Dhungeadda area on Tuesday.
According to the Range, it took Sayami under control for some hours to carry out road expansion task after he neglected Range’s frequent request not to obstruct the task. He was later handed over him to his son. RSS
